An Evening of a Young Poet at the “Old House” Theatre

Source: Press publication

Language: Georgian

Type: Newspaper article

Theatre and poetry merge into a shared space where spoken word, silence, and movement form a single performative atmosphere.

On the stage stood seven small chairs, and on them — seven golden samovars. Incense filled the space, and a single chair was placed for the author of the performance. Manuscripts lay on the table: poems, sketches, and letters.

Against this unusual сценography, and accompanied by the strong wind outside, Irakli Nadaraia read his poetry to the gathered audience. The evening was titled “The Train” and was dedicated to the poet’s brother.

This poetry evening is one of many poetic performances by Irakli Nadaraia, held across the world — in Europe, at the University of Florence, in Rome, Paris. Translations of his poems have been transferred to the National Library of Venice.

On June 25, 2022, the poet performed in Tbilisi at the “Theatre Basement” on Rustaveli Avenue. His creative evenings have also taken place at the Academy of Arts, in the exhibition hall “Ikebana,” and in literary cafés. Numerous press articles have been written about his poetry evenings.

His performances are unusual and atmospheric: a hall illuminated by dim candles, or poetry accompanied by Italian music. This time, however, the small stage of the old theatre proved especially close to his poetic world.

It was a remarkable evening of poetry. Poems about rain, trains, taverns… fragments of the poet’s life, sketches about his mother, letters — all unfolding against a musical background.

The material from this evening is being used in the creation of a documentary film about the poet, which will include video and photographic footage from Irakli Nadaraia’s creative evening in New York.
